Popular NYC Market Brings Its Buzz to the Bay Area

Cupertino Hashi Market, a popular Japanese grocery chain from New York City, has made its West Coast debut in Cupertino, California, attracting huge crowds and long lines as shoppers gathered to explore its extensive selection of Japanese food, snacks, and specialty products.

According to SFGATE, approximately 1,700 customers lined up as early as 7:30 a.m. on opening day, highlighting the strong interest in the market’s arrival in the Bay Area. The new store officially opened on October 9 at the Cupertino Crossroads shopping center, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion beyond its New York City base.

A New Destination for Japanese Food and Products

The approximately 20,000-square-foot store occupies a former Sprouts Farmers Market location on Stevens Creek Boulevard. Hashi Market offers a wide variety of imported Japanese groceries, specialty snacks, beverages, beauty products, lifestyle goods, and freshly prepared meals.

The store also features a bakery, an extensive sushi selection, and grab-and-go food options designed to appeal to busy shoppers, students, and local technology workers. Its mix of everyday essentials and specialty items aims to create an experience that goes beyond a traditional grocery store.

To celebrate the opening, the company brought Yosakoi dancers from Japan to perform, adding a cultural element to the festivities and welcoming customers to its first California location.

Expansion Beyond New York City

Hashi Market’s Cupertino opening is part of a broader expansion strategy. The company, which already operates several stores in New York City, plans to open additional locations in other parts of the United States.

According to the SFGATE report, Hashi Market is targeting 15 more stores nationwide by the end of 2027, with expansion plans that include Massachusetts and Colorado. The company is also preparing additional New York locations.

In California, the business has acquired Marina Grocery stores in Milpitas, San Mateo, and Union City. These locations are being considered for potential conversion into full Hashi Market stores, although the company’s plans for each site may evolve.

Bay Area’s Growing Interest in Asian Grocery Stores

The opening reflects growing consumer interest in Japanese and other Asian food markets throughout the Bay Area. Shoppers increasingly seek specialty ingredients, imported snacks, prepared meals, and products that offer a connection to different food cultures.

For Cupertino, Hashi Market adds another retail destination to an area known for its diverse dining and shopping options. Its combination of groceries, prepared foods, and lifestyle products could attract both regular neighborhood customers and visitors interested in exploring Japanese products.

The strong turnout on opening day suggests that Hashi Market has generated considerable excitement as it enters the California market. Whether that initial enthusiasm translates into sustained customer traffic will become clearer as the store establishes itself in the local community.

With further expansion planned, the Cupertino location could serve as an important starting point for Hashi Market’s broader West Coast ambitions.
