A Common Supplement May Unlock New Ways to Support the Immune System

Rockefeller university arginine research: A common amino acid supplement may offer a new way to help the immune system recognize and respond to cancer cells and viral infections, according to new research from scientists at Rockefeller University.

Researchers found that low levels of arginine, an amino acid naturally produced by the body and found in many protein-rich foods, may weaken the immune system’s ability to identify threats. The study suggests that increasing arginine availability could help restore important immune signals involved in detecting abnormal cells and viruses.

The scientists focused on a key immune-related protein called MHC-1, which helps cells display warning signals to immune cells known as T cells. When arginine levels were too low, researchers found that cells struggled to produce enough MHC-1, making it harder for the immune system to recognize and attack cancerous or infected cells.

In experiments involving mice, diets enriched with arginine were linked to fewer colon tumors and less severe viral infections. Researchers said the findings point to the possibility that arginine supplementation could one day be explored alongside existing treatments, including cancer immunotherapies.

The study builds on earlier research examining how changes in amino acid levels can influence cancer development and immune activity. Scientists noted that arginine was among the amino acids most affected in several disease models, including colon cancer, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Researchers emphasized that more studies are needed before arginine supplements can be recommended as a treatment for cancer or viral infections in humans. Clinical trials will be necessary to determine safe doses, effectiveness, and which patients may benefit most.

Still, scientists say the discovery highlights a growing area of research: how nutrients and metabolism can influence the body’s natural defenses. By understanding the connection between diet, cellular function, and immunity, researchers hope to develop new strategies that strengthen the immune system’s ability to fight disease.
