Sandra Bullock Says Bryan Randall’s Illness Left Her ‘Isolated’

Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly for the first time about the private battle that preceded the death of her longtime partner, photographer Bryan Randall, revealing that his ALS diagnosis left her carrying much of the emotional burden in silence.

Bullock discussed Randall’s illness and death during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast. Randall died in August 2023 at age 57 after a private three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

According to Bullock, Randall wanted his diagnosis kept private. She respected his wishes, but said the secrecy had an unintended consequence: it left her feeling isolated while she tried to care for him and manage the impact of his illness on their family.

A private battle

Bullock said only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, initially knew about Randall’s diagnosis. She later confided in close friends, including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, as she sought emotional support during an extraordinarily difficult period.

The secrecy was particularly difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Bullock was balancing Randall’s declining health with responsibilities at home.

Rather than publicly discussing what the family was experiencing, Bullock largely kept the struggle away from the spotlight.

Grieving before his death

Bullock also described how ALS changed the meaning of grief for her.

Because Randall’s condition progressively affected him physically and mentally, she said her grieving process began well before his death. She described the experience as losing aspects of the person she knew while he was still alive.

Her remarks reflect the particularly difficult nature of caring for someone with a progressive neurodegenerative disease, where families can experience a prolonged period of emotional loss alongside the physical realities of caregiving.

Bullock has previously remained largely silent about Randall’s illness and death, choosing to protect the family’s privacy.

A relationship kept largely out of the spotlight

Bullock and Randall began their relationship in 2015 after meeting when Randall photographed her son’s birthday celebration. They remained together for about eight years and shared a blended family that included Bullock’s two children and Randall’s daughter from a previous relationship.

Although Bullock was one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars, the couple generally avoided making their relationship a public spectacle.

Randall’s family announced his death in August 2023 and asked for privacy as they mourned. His relatives later expressed gratitude toward the medical professionals who cared for him during his illness.

Finding a way forward

After Randall’s death, Bullock stepped away from much of the public spotlight. She spent time with her children and focused on healing before gradually returning to professional projects.

Her decision to speak now represents a significant change from the silence that surrounded Randall’s illness.

For Bullock, however, the conversation is not simply about death. It is about the complicated experience of loving someone through a devastating illness, protecting their wishes and confronting grief long before the final goodbye.

Randall may have been gone for three years, but Bullock’s latest comments show that the process of understanding that loss has continued long after his death.
