Cyclospora Outbreak Surpasses 17,000 Cases Across 48 States

The confirmed cyclosporiasis cases 48 states have surpassed 17,000 across the United States, with health officials reporting infections in 48 states and Washington, D.C. As of August 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had recorded 17,180 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, an increase of 1,464 cases from the previous week.

Michigan Reports the Most Cases

Michigan has been particularly affected by the outbreak, accounting for more than 14,000 reported cases. The state has also reported two deaths associated with the illness. Nationwide, 922 people have been hospitalized, according to the latest figures reported by health officials.

The large number of Michigan cases has played a significant role in the rapid increase in national totals. Health officials continue to monitor the situation as additional suspected infections are investigated and laboratory-confirmed cases are added to the CDC’s surveillance data.

Lettuce Linked to a Major Outbreak

Federal investigators have linked a major multistate cluster of infections to iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico. The FDA says the defined outbreak has resulted in 10,930 illnesses, 454 hospitalizations and two deaths across 17 states. The recalled lettuce was supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico.

Officials have identified exposure to the recalled lettuce at multiple locations, while some people reported eating at Taco Bell. However, the broader national total of cyclosporiasis cases is larger than the specific lettuce-linked outbreak, meaning not every reported case has been attributed to the same source.

What Is Cyclospora?

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. The illness is commonly associated with contaminated food or water and can cause prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms.

Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, nausea and fatigue. Some infected people may experience no symptoms. People experiencing persistent diarrhea or other concerning symptoms should contact a healthcare professional.
