8 Takeaways From Patriots’ Preseason Loss to Browns

The New England Patriots closed their preseason with a 37-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns, with Dillon Gabriel and Cleveland’s offense putting pressure on New England’s backup defense throughout the game.

With the starters held out, the matchup gave Patriots depth players a final opportunity to make their cases before roster decisions. New England’s defense struggled early, allowing Cleveland to score 17 points in the first quarter.

The biggest concern was the performance of the backup defense against Browns third-string quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Cleveland produced three consecutive scoring drives, exposing potential depth problems at cornerback and other defensive positions. Kindle Vildor, Karon Prunty, Charles Woods and Marcellas Dial Jr. were among the players tested heavily.

Kyle Williams Continues to Impress

One of the brightest moments for New England came from wide receiver Kyle Williams. The young receiver caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Tommy DeVito on the Patriots’ opening drive, giving him a touchdown reception in all three preseason games. His speed and ability to stretch defenses could earn him a larger role during the regular season.

First-round offensive tackle Caleb Lomu also received valuable experience, playing nine snaps at right tackle. The rookie did not allow a pressure during his six pass-blocking snaps and continued building experience on both sides of the offensive line. Lomu has now played 112 preseason snaps, including time at both left and right tackle.

Roster Battles Come Into Focus

Second-round linebacker Gabe Jacas played 19 snaps and recorded a pressure, although he was involved in a read-option play that produced a first down for Cleveland. Meanwhile, the running-back competition received another look, with Lan Larison starting and Hassan Haskins showing his physical running style.

Special teams also produced encouraging developments. Punter Matt Haack made a strong case to fill in for the injured Bryce Baringer, including a 63-yard punt and three punts inside the 20-yard line. Kicker Andy Borregales made all three of his attempts against Cleveland and finished the final two preseason games perfect on seven kicks.

Coaching Opportunity for Ashton Grant

The finale also gave quarterbacks coach Ashton Grant an opportunity to call offensive plays. Head coach Mike Vrabel used the preseason game to give the young coach valuable experience, highlighting the Patriots’ effort to develop their coaching staff.

With the preseason now complete, the Patriots face an important roster deadline. New England must reduce its roster from 91 players to 53 by Sunday evening, making the performances against Cleveland especially significant for players competing for the final spots.
