The 56-year-old musician became widely known after releasing “Barely Breathing” in 1996. The song earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and helped launch his career as a recording artist. Sheik has since released nine studio albums and expanded his work into theater and film composition.

Duncan Sheik later became closely associated with the Broadway musical Spring Awakening, creating the music with lyricist Steven Sater. The original production received several major honors, including Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations, along with a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
His current health situation comes as several theater projects involving his work are scheduled for the coming months. A new Off-Broadway revival of Spring Awakening is expected to begin previews in November at Studio Seaview before its planned December opening.
