Flyers legends returned to the ice at the University of Pennsylvania’s Class of 1923 Ice Rink as the historic venue hosted another flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp. The annual event brought former Philadelphia players together with fans and hockey enthusiasts for a weekend centered on competition, training and the team’s rich history.
Alumni Lead Competitive Camp
This year’s camp featured three teams coached by Flyers alumni, with participants receiving on-ice instruction before taking part in competitive games. The weekend concluded with a championship game Monday morning, giving participants an opportunity to experience the atmosphere of playing alongside and learning from former professionals.
The camp package also included custom jerseys, hotel accommodations, social events and a farewell dinner. Beyond the hockey experience, the event serves a charitable purpose, with proceeds supporting Flyers Alumni charities and community outreach programs.
Flyers History Comes Alive at Penn
The championship matchup featured former Flyers Robert Esche and Mark Recchi coaching a team wearing throwback Philadelphia Firebirds uniforms. Joe Watson and Tim Kerr were joined by Hockey Hall of Famer Mark Howe behind the bench of a team representing the Philadelphia Blazers.
The throwback uniforms added another connection to Philadelphia hockey history. The Firebirds played in the city from 1974 to 1979, while the Blazers competed in the World Hockey Association during the 1972-73 season. The Blazers’ roster also once included future Flyers goaltending legend Bernie Parent.
A Special Place in Flyers History
Penn’s Class of 1923 Rink has a particularly strong connection to the Flyers. Located at 3130 Walnut Street, the rink opened in 1970 and served as the Flyers’ primary practice facility from 1969 to 1983. It was also closely associated with the early teams that became known as the Broad Street Bullies.
Today, the rink remains part of Philadelphia’s hockey community. It continues to host hockey activities, visiting NHL teams and the Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education program, connecting the city’s historic Flyers legacy with the next generation of players.
