Fundraiser attracted widespread support
The campaign was started by Erin Howell after she reportedly saw Johnson carrying heavy luggage to a home. After speaking with him, she learned that he was continuing to work despite his age because of the financial burden associated with his wife’s treatment.
The fundraiser said donations would help cover Josephine’s medical bills and allow Johnson to stop working and spend more time caring for his wife. Before the campaign was removed, it had raised more than $281,000 from thousands of donors, according to FOX 4.
Johnson and his wife had publicly expressed gratitude for the support. Johnson said the donations could allow him to stop working, while Josephine described the response from strangers as a source of encouragement.
Why GoFundMe removed the campaign
GoFundMe said its Trust & Safety team investigated the fundraiser after receiving a report questioning information associated with the campaign.
The company said the investigation uncovered “factual misrepresentations” that violated its Terms of Service. GoFundMe did not publicly specify every detail it considered inaccurate, but said its policies require authenticity and transparency from fundraisers.

During GoFundMe’s investigation, however, she acknowledged that Donald and Josephine Johnson were her parents. She reportedly said she had used the “neighbor” identity because she believed the family’s story would resonate more strongly with donors if it appeared to come from someone outside the family.
Donors to receive refunds
Following its investigation, GoFundMe removed the fundraiser and said donors would receive refunds. The company said the refunds were being issued under its GoFundMe Giving Guarantee, which is designed to protect donors when a fundraiser does not meet the platform’s requirements.
The development means that the campaign, despite having attracted significant financial support, will no longer be available through GoFundMe.
The case also highlights the importance of accurate organizer information on crowdfunding platforms. GoFundMe says fundraisers under review may be temporarily made inactive while the company evaluates whether they comply with its Terms of Service.
For the Johnson family, the removal came after a large online response to their story. While GoFundMe has confirmed the reason for its action in general terms, specific details about the factual misrepresentations identified during the investigation have not been fully disclosed publicly.
