Fans of How I Met Your Mother may remember Ted Mosby, Marshall, Lily, Robin and Barney as an inseparable group of friends. But more than a decade after the CBS sitcom ended, actor Josh Radnor says the cast’s real-life relationships are far less close than the show made them appear.
Radnor, who played Ted Mosby throughout the show’s nine-season run, recently reflected on his relationship with former castmates Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan, Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders during an appearance on the Half the Picture podcast.
Asked whether the cast is still close, Radnor gave a blunt answer: “No, no, not even a little bit.”
His comments may surprise longtime viewers who watched the five characters build one of television’s most recognizable friendship groups over the course of 208 episodes.
No falling-out, Radnor says
Radnor was quick to clarify that the cast’s distance is not the result of a major disagreement or personal feud.
Instead, he described their relationship as something that naturally changed after the series ended. The actors spent years working together in an unusually intense environment, but once the show concluded, their lives and careers moved in different directions.
Radnor compared the experience to college, where people can become extremely close because they share the same environment every day, only to gradually lose touch after moving on.
That distinction appears important to Radnor. While he no longer considers the group close friends, he said he continues to have deep affection for his former colleagues.
A bond that still matters
The actor described his feelings toward the cast as a lasting kind of love, even though they are no longer actively involved in one another’s daily lives.
There have still been occasional reunions and connections. Radnor has spoken with Segel from time to time, while Smulders and Segel have recently worked together again on Shrinking. Radnor also reunited with Harris through his How We Made Your Mother podcast.
Hannigan was also present at Radnor’s 2024 wedding, although the two have apparently not remained in regular contact since then.
Why fans may be surprised
The revelation highlights a familiar difference between television and real life.
How I Met Your Mother, which premiered in 2005 and concluded in 2014, was built around friendship. Ted’s story centered on the people who surrounded him in New York, with Marshall, Lily, Robin and Barney becoming his extended family.
Because the actors spent nine seasons portraying such a tight-knit group, viewers naturally assumed some of that connection existed away from the cameras.
Radnor’s comments offer a more ordinary explanation: sometimes people can share an extraordinary period of their lives without remaining close forever.
The end of an era
For Radnor, the lack of regular contact does not erase what the cast experienced together.
The series became a defining part of the actors’ careers and developed a devoted audience that continues to revisit the show more than a decade after its finale.
But the actors themselves have moved forward.
Radnor has pursued acting, directing, writing, music and other projects since How I Met Your Mother. His former co-stars have likewise built careers beyond the sitcom.
The friendships portrayed on screen may have been fictional, but the memories created during nearly a decade of working together remain real.
And while Radnor says the cast is “not even a little bit” close today, his message was not one of bitterness.
It was simply a reminder that even the strongest on-screen friendships do not necessarily survive unchanged once the cameras stop rolling.
