Meta Makes Its Most Powerful AI Model Open Source

Meta is stepping up its push for more accessible artificial intelligence with the launch of Muse Glimmer, a new open-weight AI model designed to bring advanced AI capabilities to developers and users running consumer hardware.

The release comes as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg argues that powerful AI should be made more widely available rather than controlled by a small number of technology companies. The company is also preparing to release an open version of its larger Muse Spark 1.2 model.

Muse Glimmer Targets Consumer Computers

Muse Glimmer is designed to be relatively lightweight compared with Meta’s larger AI systems. According to reports, the model is optimized to run on consumer devices such as Macs and PCs equipped with a single graphics card.

Meta is also expected to make the weights for Muse Spark 1.2 available. Spark is a substantially more powerful model in the Muse lineup, and its wider availability would give developers access to a model that previously had a more limited distribution.
