Meta Stock Slips on Soft Outlook, Declining Free Cash Flow

Meta Platforms shares came under pressure after the company released its second-quarter 2026 financial results, as investors focused on a softer-than-expected outlook and a sharp decline in free cash flow despite strong revenue growth.

The social media giant reported quarterly revenue of $60.8 billion, representing a 28% year-over-year increase, driven by continued strength in digital advertising and growing engagement across its family of apps. However, earnings per share missed analyst expectations, while higher operating costs weighed on profitability.

A major concern for investors was Meta’s guidance for the current quarter, which suggested revenue growth could moderate in the months ahead. The company also increased its spending outlook as it accelerates investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure, including data centers, AI chips, and next-generation computing capabilities.

Meta’s free cash flow fell sharply to approximately $784 million, down significantly from the same period a year earlier. The decline reflects rising capital expenditures and increased operating expenses tied to the company’s aggressive AI expansion strategy.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said AI remains central to Meta’s long-term vision, describing the technology as a key driver of future products, advertising improvements, and enterprise opportunities. The company believes its investments will strengthen its competitive position over the coming years, even as they pressure near-term financial performance.

Despite healthy user growth across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, and other platforms, investors appeared more concerned about rising costs and slowing earnings momentum. Analysts noted that while Meta continues to generate robust revenue, its expanding AI investments are reducing cash generation in the short term.

The market reaction highlights growing investor sensitivity toward capital spending among major technology companies. As firms race to build advanced AI infrastructure, shareholders are increasingly weighing whether higher expenditures will translate into sustainable long-term returns.

Looking ahead, Meta faces the challenge of balancing heavy AI investments with maintaining profitability and cash flow. Future quarterly results will likely be closely watched for signs that these investments are delivering measurable financial benefits while supporting continued growth in the company’s core advertising business.
