Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman was hospitalized Sunday after a foul ball struck him in the face while he was waiting in the on-deck area during the team’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. The ball bounced before striking Bregman on the left side of his face, just below the eye. Bregman immediately moved toward the Cubs’ dugout while covering his face. Blood was visible, and an athletic trainer escorted him into the clubhouse.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell later said Bregman had a cut beneath his left eye, some bleeding from his nose and noticeable swelling. He was taken to a local hospital for X-rays and a CT scan to check for possible facial injuries.

Following the incident, Bregman gave fans an update by posting a photo of his injured face on social media. The image showed significant swelling around his eye and blood on his face.
Despite the frightening appearance of the injury, Bregman offered a reassuring message to those who contacted him. He thanked fans for their messages and indicated that he planned to return.
The Cubs had already built a strong lead when Bregman left the game, eventually defeating Cincinnati 9-1. Matt Shaw replaced him after the injury. Bregman had contributed before leaving, going 1-for-1 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored.

The full extent of Bregman’s injury remained unclear immediately after the game. The Cubs were waiting for the results of his medical evaluation before determining whether he would miss additional games.
Bregman has been an important part of Chicago’s lineup during his first season with the team. He entered the game batting .262 with 26 home runs and 89 RBIs after signing a five-year, $175 million contract with the Cubs in January.
