Ukraine has developed the mich 2000 ukrainian drone, a long-range strike aircraft that reportedly can travel up to 2,000 kilometers after engineers reverse-engineered a Chinese aircraft. The MICH 2000, built for Ukraine’s SBU Alpha special operations center, has drawn attention after reportedly being used in an attack that destroyed a Russian Tu-95MS strategic bomber. According to Tom’s Hardware, the drone costs about $48,000 in its basic configuration.
From Chinese Design to Ukrainian Production
The MICH 2000 is reportedly based on the Chinese ZTK-150, which Ukrainian developers were unable to purchase after China restricted exports of certain drones. A Ukrainian team traveled to a Chinese factory in late 2023 under the arrangement of pilot training. While there, the team reportedly photographed the production line and returned home with eight drones, using the information to develop a domestic version.
The project was not successful immediately. The first Ukrainian-built prototype crashed during its maiden flight in 2024, while another test aircraft was reportedly brought down by Russian electronic warfare. Early combat tests also produced mixed results. Despite those setbacks, Ukraine continued development and moved the drone into production.
MICH 2000 Targets Long-Range Missions
The resulting aircraft reportedly carries a warhead weighing up to 60 kilograms and has a range of about 2,000 kilometers. Ukrainian manufacturers also localized much of the design, with engines, fuselages, warheads and rocket boosters sourced from domestic suppliers. Tom’s Hardware reports that around 85% of the drone’s value initially came from Ukrainian production, although adding advanced jam-resistant navigation equipment can significantly increase costs.
The drone’s reported combat record has helped attract attention to Ukraine’s growing long-range strike capability. The SBU said a MICH 2000 strike at Russia’s Engels-2 air base damaged the tail section of a Tu-95MS, while satellite imagery later confirmed the bomber’s destruction. The manufacturer says thousands of MICH 2000 drones have been launched against hundreds of targets.
Production Expands
The manufacturer reportedly produces about 6,000 drones annually across eight versions and is working toward increasing output to 10,000 units. Different versions can use various communication systems, while the company continues investing in research and development.
A successor, known as MICH+, is also being developed with a larger 70-kilogram warhead and a shorter reported range of 600 kilometers. The development highlights how Ukraine is increasingly relying on relatively inexpensive, domestically produced unmanned aircraft for long-distance operations during the war.
