AMD Stock Could Surge 40% After Analyst Upgrade

Motley Fool is highlighting AMD stock as it attracts renewed investor attention after Raymond James upgraded Advanced Micro Devices to a Strong Buy and raised its price target to $641 from $565. The new target implies roughly 40% upside from the level cited in the report, as the analyst sees growing opportunities for AMD in artificial intelligence infrastructure and server CPUs.

Analyst Sees Strong AI Opportunity

Raymond James analyst Simon Leopold believes the rapid expansion of AI workloads could create a much larger market for server CPUs. His forecast calls for the server CPU market to grow at a 44% compound annual rate through 2030, reaching approximately $201 billion.

The thesis goes beyond traditional data-center computing. As AI systems become more complex, CPUs are increasingly needed to coordinate accelerators and handle workloads involving databases, security, applications and other supporting tasks.

AMD Gains Ground in Data Centers

AMD has been benefiting from strong demand for its data-center products. The company’s second-quarter 2026 results showed data-center revenue increasing 107% year over year, highlighting the momentum behind its server business.

Raymond James believes AMD is particularly well positioned because it combines exposure to server CPUs with its growing AI accelerator business. The firm sees AMD’s combination of earnings leverage, data-center positioning and potential market-share gains as a key reason for the bullish upgrade.

AMD Faces Major Competition

The opportunity also comes with significant competition. AMD continues to compete with Intel in server CPUs while challenging Nvidia in AI accelerators. Nvidia is also expanding into the CPU market, making the data-center landscape increasingly competitive.

Still, the Raymond James outlook suggests AMD could benefit as AI infrastructure spending expands beyond GPUs. The analyst expects CPU demand to grow alongside the broader AI ecosystem rather than being replaced by accelerator technology.

What the $641 Target Means

The $641 price target represents an optimistic scenario rather than a guaranteed outcome. AMD’s future performance will depend on AI spending, server CPU adoption, competition, product execution and overall semiconductor market conditions.

The upgrade nevertheless gives investors another bullish signal after AMD’s recent earnings performance. With AI infrastructure continuing to expand, AMD’s position in both CPUs and accelerators could remain a major factor in the stock’s long-term outlook. Investors should treat analyst targets as forecasts, not guarantees, and consider the risks before making investment decisions.
