It’s status quo with Rohit Sharma. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has indicated that there is no imminent threat to the position of the former captain whose availability for the 2027 World Cup has been a subject of intense speculation.
“You must have seen he is playing brilliantly,” said BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia after a performance review of the Indian team at the BCCI headquarters on Thursday (September 3).
The meeting was attended by the two India skippers, Shubman Gill (Test and ODI) and Shreyas Iyer (T20Is). Head coach Gautam Gambhir and CoE head VVS Laxman were also present. Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, was a conspicuous absentee. He was out of Mumbai and apparently in a no-internet zone.
The BCCI secretary also dismissed the talk of Laxman being considered for a new role, such as director of cricket. He further ruled out any immediate change in the Agarkar-led selection committee although his absence from the meeting will continue to raise speculations.
