Walmart Finally Embraces Apple Pay and Tap-to-Pay

Walmart tap to pay: Starting August 24, 2026, select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations will begin offering contactless payment at checkout. The retailer plans to expand the feature to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of the year.

The change represents a major shift for Walmart, which for years encouraged customers to use its own Walmart Pay system. That system requires shoppers to scan a QR code through the Walmart app rather than simply tapping a phone, watch or contactless card on a payment terminal.

Apple Pay and Google Pay arrive

Under the new system, customers will be able to tap compatible phones, smartwatches and contactless cards at checkout. Apple Pay and Google Pay will be among the supported digital-wallet services.

Eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards can also be added to digital wallets, giving customers more ways to complete purchases without relying exclusively on Walmart’s app.

Walmart says the goal is to give shoppers greater flexibility in choosing how they pay.

The retailer’s existing payment options will not disappear. Walmart Pay will remain available, while Sam’s Club members will continue to have access to its Scan & Go service.

A significant reversal

Walmart’s embrace of tap-to-pay is notable because the company had been one of the largest U.S. retailers to resist NFC-based payments.

Instead of adopting Apple Pay and similar services, Walmart promoted its proprietary payment system. The company had also been involved in efforts to develop alternatives to mainstream mobile wallets, including the now-defunct CurrentC initiative.

The new policy brings Walmart closer to other major retailers that have already adopted contactless payments.

For shoppers, the difference is straightforward: instead of opening the Walmart app and scanning a QR code, customers with compatible devices can simply hold their phone or smartwatch near the payment terminal.

The rollout will take time

The initial launch on August 24 will cover only a selection of Walmart and Sam’s Club locations. Walmart has not publicly identified all of the stores that will receive the feature first.

The company expects tap-to-pay to reach its U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026. Fuel stations will take longer, with contactless payments expected there by mid-2027.

That means customers should not assume every Walmart location will immediately accept Apple Pay when the rollout begins.

What it means for shoppers

For millions of Walmart customers, the change could make checkout faster and more familiar.

Apple Pay and Google Pay are already widely used at retailers across the country, allowing shoppers to keep payment cards stored securely on their phones or watches. Walmart’s decision means customers who prefer those services will no longer have to switch to a separate payment method when shopping at Walmart.

The move also gives customers a choice between traditional cards, Walmart Pay, digital wallets and other existing checkout options.

After years of standing apart from the broader contactless-payment trend, Walmart is now moving toward the system many shoppers already expect at major retailers.
