Broadcom Anticipates Sharp Rise in AI Chip Sales

Broadcom is projecting a dramatic increase in sales of chips designed for artificial intelligence applications, signaling that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong despite growing concerns about the enormous cost of building data centers.

The semiconductor company said AI chip revenue could reach approximately $115 billion in fiscal 2027, up from its earlier projection of more than $100 billion. Broadcom expects that figure to potentially double to about $230 billion in fiscal 2028, highlighting the rapid expansion it anticipates in AI computing and networking demand.

The upbeat long-term outlook comes as major technology companies continue to invest heavily in artificial intelligence. Broadcom supplies custom AI processors and networking components that help power large-scale data centers, giving the company a significant role in the expanding AI hardware market.

Broadcom’s third-quarter results also demonstrated the strength of its AI business. AI semiconductor revenue reached $16.7 billion, representing a 221% increase from a year earlier. Overall quarterly revenue rose 86% to $29.59 billion, while adjusted earnings came in above Wall Street expectations.

Chief Executive Officer Hock Tan indicated that Broadcom has secured substantial customer commitments and is working to ensure enough supply to meet rising demand. Customers involved in the company’s AI business include major technology and AI companies such as Google, Meta, Anthropic and OpenAI.

However, investors remain cautious. Broadcom’s fourth-quarter revenue outlook of roughly $34.8 billion was close to, but slightly different from, Wall Street expectations depending on the estimate used, while concerns remain about competition and the sustainability of massive AI infrastructure spending.

Broadcom’s forecast nevertheless underscores the company’s confidence that AI-related spending has much further to run. If technology companies continue expanding data-center capacity and adopting custom processors, demand for Broadcom’s AI chips and networking technology could become an increasingly important driver of its growth over the next several years.

The latest outlook suggests that the AI semiconductor race is expanding beyond traditional GPU suppliers, with custom chips and high-speed networking emerging as critical components of the infrastructure needed to support increasingly powerful AI systems.
