Carlos Alcaraz Moves Ahead Against Munar in Tokyo

Carlos Alcaraz and Jaume Munar faced off in an all-Spanish semifinal at the ATP 500 Japan Open in Tokyo on Monday, with a place in the final at stake.

Alcaraz entered the match as the defending champion and the tournament’s top seed, while Munar arrived after an impressive run that included a straight-sets victory over France’s Kyrian Jacquet. The semifinal guaranteed that a Spanish player would reach the Tokyo final for a second consecutive year.

Alcaraz reached the semifinal after Denis Shapovalov was forced to retire during their quarterfinal. The Spaniard had won the opening set 7-6(3) and led 2-1 in the second when the Canadian stopped because of a physical problem.

The result extended Alcaraz’s perfect record in Tokyo to eight victories without a defeat. He is attempting to become the first player since Pete Sampras to successfully defend the Tokyo title in consecutive editions.

The tournament has also been part of Alcaraz’s return to top form following a wrist injury. After reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open and helping Europe win the Laver Cup, the Spaniard has continued building momentum in Japan.

Munar Arrives With Confidence

Munar earned his semifinal place with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jacquet. The Mallorcan came through qualifying and continued his strong tournament run by producing another composed performance in the quarterfinals.

The semifinal marked the fifth ATP meeting between the two Spaniards. Alcaraz had won three of their previous four encounters, with Munar taking their first meeting at the 2021 Marbella tournament. Their previous matches had all been played on surfaces other than the Tokyo hard court.

The matchup presented an interesting contrast. Alcaraz brought his aggressive baseline game and explosive movement, while Munar’s consistency and ability to extend rallies offered a different challenge.

Before the match, Alcaraz described the semifinal as a difficult test, noting that Munar’s solid style could be particularly effective under Tokyo’s slower conditions.

The Spaniard was also looking to continue a strong run in ATP 500 events. His victory over Shapovalov had extended his winning streak in ATP 500 tournaments to 19 matches.

A Spanish Finalist Guaranteed carlos alcaraz

Regardless of the outcome, the semifinal ensured that Spain would have a representative in the Tokyo final.

The winner will face either Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot or Czech player Jiri Lehecka in the championship match. The final is scheduled for Tuesday in Tokyo.

For Alcaraz, the goal is clear: continue his title defense and regain the form that has made him one of the leading players on the ATP Tour. For Munar, the match represents an opportunity to reach only the second ATP final of his career.

The all-Spanish showdown therefore carried significance for both players, with Alcaraz seeking another Tokyo title and Munar attempting to turn his breakthrough run into a place in the championship match.
