Dairy Queen’s U.S. Footprint Shrinks After Dozens of Store Closures

Dairy Queen has closed several franchise-operated restaurants across the United States, with Alaska experiencing the latest wave of shutdowns. Three locations in Anchorage, Wasilla, and Palmer permanently closed at the end of June, leaving Soldotna as the state’s only remaining Dairy Queen restaurant.

Company representatives confirmed the closures but did not publicly provide a reason, stating only that the affected stores were owned by the same franchise operator. The closures have disappointed local customers who relied on the restaurants for the chain’s popular frozen desserts and fast-food menu.

Texas Recorded the Largest Number of Closures

The most significant reduction in Dairy Queen locations took place earlier in 2025, when franchise operator Project Lonestar closed dozens of restaurants in Texas. The closures followed a dispute with the company over required restaurant upgrades, eventually resulting in the termination of the franchise agreement.

Elsewhere, another long-standing Dairy Queen in Great Falls, Montana, ended operations after serving the community for nearly four decades. These closures are linked to individual franchise businesses rather than a companywide decision to reduce the brand’s presence.

Dairy Queen Continues to Operate Thousands of Restaurants

Despite the recent closures, Dairy Queen remains one of the world’s largest quick-service restaurant chains, operating around 7,800 locations in approximately 20 countries. Like many restaurant brands, some franchise owners have been dealing with rising food costs, higher wages, increased operating expenses, and changing consumer spending habits.

While these economic pressures have forced certain operators to close their businesses, Dairy Queen continues to serve millions of customers through its global franchise network. The company has indicated that the recent closures do not reflect the overall strength of the brand, which continues to expand and serve communities across the United States and around the world.
