Emma Heming Willis has offered an emotional update on her husband, actor Bruce Willis, saying that the Hollywood star remains “very present” despite his ongoing battle with frontotemporal dementia.
In an exclusive preview of her upcoming interview with Richard Lui for the MS NOW series Because We Care, Heming Willis spoke candidly about life with the 71-year-old Die Hard and Pulp Fiction star. While acknowledging the challenges of the disease, she emphasized that their family continues to experience meaningful moments of happiness and connection.
“We have still so many beautiful moments of joy and connection,” Heming Willis said, explaining that she believes it is important to share those experiences because dementia is often surrounded by negative perceptions.
She also stressed the importance of making sure people living with dementia and their caregivers are not overlooked or isolated.
“When we think about that or don’t want to talk about dementia and put it in a corner, the person living with the disease and their caregiver aren’t seen, they aren’t supported,” she said.
Family Has Learned to Adapt
Heming Willis acknowledged that dementia has brought difficult changes to the family, describing the disease as “terrible.” At the same time, she said there are still unexpected moments of joy.
We’ve learned to adapt and show up for Bruce, she explained.
Bruce Willis was initially diagnosed with aphasia in 2023 before his condition was later identified as frontotemporal dementia, commonly known as FTD. The neurological disorder can affect communication, behavior and personality.
Heming Willis has previously discussed another aspect of Bruce’s condition known as anosognosia. She explained that the neurological symptom can prevent someone from recognizing changes caused by their disease, meaning it should not necessarily be interpreted as denial or a refusal to accept a diagnosis.
Family Continues to Support Bruce
Bruce and Emma Heming Willis married in 2009 and have two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn. Bruce also shares three daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah with his former wife, Demi Moore.
Members of the family have continued to publicly support Bruce throughout his health journey. In August, he made a rare appearance at daughter Tallulah Willis’ wedding, where she shared a photo showing a tender moment between her father and her husband, Justin.
For Heming Willis, the focus remains on meeting Bruce where he is and appreciating the moments of connection they continue to share.
Her latest comments also reflect her broader effort to change how people talk about dementia. Rather than allowing the diagnosis to define every aspect of Bruce’s life, she wants others to recognize that people living with dementia can still experience meaningful relationships, happiness and connection.
