South Bay Family Grows to Seven After Rare Triplet Arrival

A South Bay family is celebrating a remarkable new chapter after welcoming naturally conceived triplets, growing from a family of four to seven almost overnight.

Nyla Craft said she discovered she was expecting three babies during a doctor’s appointment earlier this year. At first, she believed she was having twins after seeing two sets during the examination. Her doctor then delivered the surprising news: there was a third baby.

The pregnancy was especially unusual because the triplets were conceived naturally. According to Quynh Vo-Hanser of Kaiser Permanente South Bay, the pregnancy involved what doctors describe as mixed triplets an identical pair and a third fraternal sibling.

Vo-Hanser said triplet pregnancies are already uncommon. Of roughly 3.5 million deliveries in the United States, only about 2,400 involve triplets, she explained. The family’s situation was considered even more unusual because all three babies are the same sex.

Craft also said multiples run in her family. Her mother is a twin, and there are triplets in the extended family, making the unexpected pregnancy a surprising continuation of that history.

For Craft’s husband, Marco Bernal, the news was overwhelming. The couple already had two children, older daughter Naya and son Maceo, and suddenly faced the prospect of raising five children.

The older siblings have responded differently to the new arrivals. Naya has been excited about becoming a big sister and wants to help care for the babies, while Maceo has shown considerably less interest in his three new siblings.

The unusual delivery also required a much larger medical team than a typical birth. Hospital officials said about 15 people were present in the delivery room, including three NICU nurses one assigned to each baby along with doctors and nurses caring for both the newborns and their mother.

Craft praised the medical staff for the care and support she received throughout the pregnancy and delivery.

Dr. Rohit Passi, chief of neonatology at Kaiser Permanente South Bay, said the medical team’s approach focused on supporting Craft throughout her pregnancy and addressing the challenges she faced.

The arrival of the triplets also created a memorable birthday connection for Bernal. The babies were born on his birthday, giving the family another reason to remember the extraordinary day.

What began as an unexpected discovery at a routine doctor’s appointment has now transformed the South Bay couple’s household. With three newborns joining their two older children, Craft and Bernal are embracing life as a family of seven and celebrating a birth doctors describe as exceptionally rare.
