Trump Taps Heidi Overton as FDA Commissioner

President Donald Trump has decided to nominate White House health-policy aide Heidi Overton to serve as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, according to a senior administration official.

Overton currently serves as deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. Her selection comes as the FDA continues to navigate a period of uncertainty following the departure of former Commissioner Marty Makary earlier this year.

The White House had considered several candidates for the position before settling on Overton. The administration has not yet permanently filled several other senior FDA positions, although officials indicated additional leadership decisions could follow.

Vaccine Policy Draws Attention

Overton’s role in the administration’s vaccine policy is likely to receive significant attention during the confirmation process.

She appeared with Trump last week when he signed an executive order calling for changes to the childhood vaccine schedule. The order called for reducing the number of federally recommended childhood shots and separating the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine into individual shots.

At the event, Overton said the administration continued to recommend measles vaccination while emphasizing parental choice over the timing and administration of vaccines.

Her involvement in the policy could become a major issue when senators consider her nomination.

Industry Concerns

Overton’s nomination may also face scrutiny from the pharmaceutical industry and some former administration officials.

Critics have questioned whether she has sufficient management experience to lead the FDA, one of the government’s most influential regulatory agencies. Some industry observers also worry that her appointment could reverse efforts to improve relations between the agency and drugmakers.

Others have defended the choice. Brian Blase, president of the Paragon Health Institute, described Overton as a strong candidate and praised her commitment to improving healthcare for American patients.

Senate Confirmation Could Be Challenging

Overton will need Senate confirmation before taking over permanently as FDA commissioner.

Her participation in Trump’s recent vaccine announcement could complicate that process. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., the outgoing chairman of the Senate health committee, has criticized the administration’s vaccine order, calling it a mistake.

The FDA plays a critical role in regulating prescription drugs, medical devices, vaccines, food safety and other products used by millions of Americans. The agency’s leadership has therefore attracted intense attention as the Trump administration works to reshape federal health policy.

If confirmed, Overton would take charge of an FDA facing both internal challenges and significant pressure over the direction of U.S. healthcare regulation.
