The Chicago Cubs have turned the Crosstown Series into a pair of dramatic finishes, winning consecutive games against the Chicago White Sox in walk-off fashion.
The Cubs prevailed 4-3 Tuesday night at Wrigley Field, with Alex Bregman delivering the decisive RBI single in the ninth inning. The victory followed Monday’s 7-5 extra-inning thriller, giving Chicago two straight wins decided in its final at-bat.
Bregman finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs. His first important hit came in the seventh, when his single tied the game after the Cubs had fallen behind. Two innings later, he came through again.
Carson Kelly started the winning rally with a double to left against White Sox reliever Trevor Richards. After Chicago intentionally walked Pete Crow-Armstrong, Bregman stepped in and lined the game-winning single, sending the Cubs into another celebration at Wrigley.
Crow-Armstrong Makes History
Pete Crow-Armstrong also played a major role in the victory. He opened the game with his 31st home run of the season, marking his second consecutive leadoff homer.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Crow-Armstrong became the first player in MLB history to hit two leadoff home runs and a walk-off homer within a two-game span. He had hit a walk-off home run in Monday’s 10-inning victory.
Michael Busch also homered for the Cubs in the first inning, giving Chicago an early 2-0 advantage.
White Sox Rally
The White Sox answered after the Cubs’ fast start. Drew Romo’s RBI single in the second inning put Chicago’s lead under pressure, while Munetaka Murakami’s 29th homer of the season tied the game in the third.
Tristan Peters then put the White Sox ahead with an RBI double in the fourth. The White Sox finished with 10 hits, but could not hold onto their lead late.
Colson Montgomery recorded three hits for the White Sox, who entered the series leading the American League Central.
Pitching and Rain Delay
Cubs starter Kevin Gausman allowed three runs on seven hits over 4⅓ innings before leaving with a cramp in his non-throwing left hand.
Erick Fedde provided strong relief for the White Sox, throwing 4⅔ scoreless innings and keeping the game within reach. But the Chicago bullpen ultimately surrendered the decisive run in the ninth.
The game was also interrupted by an 88-minute rain delay in the eighth inning, adding another layer of drama to an already tense Crosstown matchup.
Jacob Webb earned the victory after pitching a scoreless ninth. The win was the Cubs’ eighth consecutive victory over the White Sox at Wrigley Field.
Cubs Keep Finding Ways to Win
The back-to-back walk-offs highlight the Cubs’ ability to stay competitive deep into games. Monday’s victory came from Crow-Armstrong’s dramatic two-run homer in the 10th inning, while Tuesday’s game was settled by Bregman’s clutch single in the ninth.
For the White Sox, the two losses were particularly painful. They held leads in both games but could not close either one out.
For the Cubs, meanwhile, the Crosstown Series has become a showcase for late-game heroics and Bregman and Crow-Armstrong have provided plenty of them.
