Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, will leave her position at the end of August, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday, bringing an end to her tenure as one of the most prominent public faces of his administration.
Trump said Leavitt was stepping down to spend more time with her family and would remain connected to the president as one of his top outside advisers.
Leavitt, 28, returned to the White House last month after maternity leave following the birth of her daughter, Viviana, in May. She said the demands of the press secretary position made it difficult to balance her responsibilities as a mother with the intense schedule required by the job.
In a statement announcing her decision, Leavitt said she wanted to be the mother her two young children deserve while recognizing that the White House press secretary role requires constant time, energy and attention. She described her departure as a “bittersweet” decision and said she was ready to begin a new chapter in her life.
Leavitt became White House press secretary in January 2025 at age 27, making her the youngest person ever to hold the position. Before joining Trump’s second administration, she worked as a press aide during his first term and later served as a spokeswoman for his 2024 presidential campaign and transition team. She also ran unsuccessfully for Congress in New Hampshire in 2022.
During her tenure, Leavitt became a highly visible and often combative defender of Trump and his policies. She frequently clashed with reporters during White House briefings and strongly criticized Democrats and media organizations she believed were hostile to the administration.
Her tenure also attracted criticism from fact-checkers and political opponents over several controversial statements and claims. Despite those disputes, Trump and his allies repeatedly praised her communication skills and loyalty to the administration.
Trump did not immediately announce who would replace Leavitt as press secretary.
