The Royals vs Dodgers matchup once again ended in frustration for Kansas City, as the Royals fell 6-5 to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night despite holding an early lead and repeatedly putting themselves in position to win. The late-game loss continued the Royals’ recent bullpen struggles, turning another winnable game into a disappointing defeat.
Kansas City took a 3-2 advantage into the sixth inning, but the bullpen could not protect the lead as Los Angeles rallied. The Dodgers eventually took control and held on for the one-run victory, leaving the Royals with another frustrating loss during a difficult stretch of the season.
The loss was particularly disappointing because the Royals received several strong individual performances on both sides of the ball.
Royals Take Early Lead Behind Caglianone
Rookie Jac Caglianone continued his impressive recent run at the plate, providing Kansas City with one of its biggest offensive highlights.
Caglianone launched a home run in the third inning, extending his hitting streak to nine games. The blast left his bat at 110.8 mph and helped the Royals build an early advantage against Dodgers starter Tarik Skubal.
Bobby Witt Jr. also made his presence felt, contributing offensively while making several standout defensive plays.
The Royals managed to chase Skubal after five innings, but they were unable to turn that advantage into a victory.
Dodgers Rally Against the Royals Bullpen
The game began to unravel for Kansas City in the sixth inning.
Starter Noah Cameron surrendered four runs over 5⅔ innings before the Royals turned the game over to their bullpen. John Schreiber was unable to stop the Dodgers’ rally, and Los Angeles pushed across three runs to move in front.
The Royals refused to go quietly.
Kyle Isbel delivered a two-run home run in the seventh inning, tying the game at 5-5 and giving Kansas City another chance to seize control.
Instead, the Dodgers answered again.
Freddie Freeman Delivers the Decisive Hit
Los Angeles regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh when Freddie Freeman delivered an RBI single that scored Shohei Ohtani.
Freeman finished with three hits, helping provide the offensive spark the Dodgers needed after falling behind early.
Max Muncy also played a major role in the comeback, producing a three-run double during the sixth-inning rally.
The Dodgers’ bullpen then took care of the rest.
Jack Dreyer earned the victory, while Edwin Díaz closed the game with a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save.
Another Costly Bullpen Failure
For Kansas City, the latest loss once again put the spotlight on its struggling bullpen.
The Royals have repeatedly watched winnable games disappear because of late-inning pitching problems. Monday’s loss followed another recent collapse against Minnesota, when the bullpen surrendered a late lead and cost Kansas City a chance at a sweep.
The bullpen’s struggles have become one of the defining problems of the Royals’ season. Recent statistical analysis has ranked the 2026 Kansas City relief corps among the worst in franchise history, with the unit struggling across several major pitching metrics.
Against the Dodgers, the offense did enough to keep Kansas City competitive. The starters also gave the team a chance.
The bullpen simply could not finish the job.
Dodgers Edge Royals in Tight Finish
Despite the loss, Kansas City showed plenty of fight.
Caglianone continued his hot streak, Isbel provided a crucial tying homer and Witt turned in another strong all-around performance. But the Royals could not overcome the late pitching problems.
The Dodgers improved to 1-0 on the homestand, while Kansas City fell to 3-8 since July 30.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again Tuesday, giving the Royals an immediate opportunity to respond.
For Kansas City, however, the challenge remains the same: find a way to protect leads late.
Until the bullpen can consistently do that, even strong offensive performances and competitive starts may continue to end in frustrating losses.
