Sonos has announced Sonos 27, the newest version of the audio operating system it has been building for more than twenty years, and the biggest shift is philosophical. The system no longer expects you to settle on one voice assistant. Sonos is adding its own, called Sonos 27voice, built specifically around music and mood. It is also adding Sonos 27mcp, which lets any outside AI assistant or agent connect to your speakers, OpenAI’s ChatGPT included.For listeners in India, the more immediate news is hardware. Sonos Play, the portable speaker the company positions as its most versatile, goes on general sale here on September 8, the same day the first Sonos 27 features begin rolling out. Two new flagships announced globally, the Beam Ultra soundbar and the Sonos Ace Ultra headphones, will reach India later, with local pricing and availability still to be confirmed.

Sonos 27mcp arrives in Early Access on September 8. Atty Eleti, product lead for ChatGPT Voice at OpenAI, framed the appeal simply: you can ask ChatGPT to play music in any room without stepping out of the conversation you are already having. Sonos went a step further and previewed Custom Agents, which will let people build their own agents on the system, each with a chosen model, persona and voice. Sonos Play connects over WiFi to group across rooms or pair in stereo, and ships with a charging base for the house. Outside it, you get 24 hours of battery, an IP67 waterproof body, a removable utility loop and a built-in power bank for your phone. The interesting bit is Bluetooth grouping. Connect Sonos Play to your phone, then hold Play/Pause on up to three more Sonos Play or Move 2 units to sync them. Automatic Trueplay tunes the sound to wherever you have landed. The battery is replaceable.Sonos Fabric handles the rest. Positioning Technology uses high-frequency sound to work out where a speaker is standing, so a portable becomes a rear surround the moment you move it into place. Headphone linking pushes audio between speakers and Ace Ultra. Beam Ultra, meanwhile, squeezes 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos into a mid-size bar.
