Trump health has drawn renewed attention after Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a physician and former cardiologist to Vice President Dick Cheney, highlighted what he described as an unusual change in the president’s behavior.
Speaking on CNN, Reiner focused on Trump’s apparent difficulty staying awake during public events and meetings, saying the episodes have become noticeable over recent months. Reiner’s comments followed Trump appearing to fall asleep during an Oval Office event about vaccines on August 10.
The doctor said Trump has long been known as a night owl, but argued that frequently dozing off during the day while surrounded by people is different from his established sleep habits. He called the behavior unusual and said it deserved medical attention.
White House Pushes Back
The discussion comes after Reiner published an opinion article in The New York Times raising questions about Trump health.
Reiner stressed that he is not Trump’s personal physician and said he had reviewed only medical information that had been made public. He also pointed to physical signs that he said were visible in photographs of the president.
The White House responded sharply to Reiner’s comments, accusing him of making an “armchair diagnosis” for political purposes. Reiner rejected that characterization, saying he had not diagnosed Trump and had instead raised questions based on publicly available information. He also noted that the Trump White House Medical Unit had previously recognized his service.
Public Attention Grows for Trump health
Trump’s health has increasingly become a subject of public discussion as images and videos of his appearances circulate widely.
Reiner acknowledged that the president has a number of reported health issues and habits, but singled out the apparent daytime sleepiness as particularly noteworthy because it represents a change from what he described as Trump’s usual behavior.
The White House has not indicated that Trump’s daytime sleepiness represents a newly diagnosed medical condition. Reiner’s observations therefore remain commentary rather than a diagnosis.
The episode nevertheless highlights the continuing public scrutiny surrounding the health of an 80-year-old president and the debate over how much information about a president’s medical condition should be publicly discussed.
