The Dallas Wings could not regain their footing Friday night, falling 94-76 to the Golden State Valkyries at American Airlines Center as their struggles following the All-Star break continued.
Dallas entered the matchup looking to bounce back after a 96-92 loss to Washington earlier in the week. Instead, the Wings struggled to generate consistent offense against one of the WNBA’s strongest defensive teams and suffered their fourth loss in their last five games.
The defeat highlighted a growing concern for Dallas: the team has had difficulty maintaining the rhythm and offensive balance that helped fuel its strong stretch earlier in the season.
Fudd’s Absence Felt
One of the biggest setbacks came before tipoff, when rookie guard Azzi Fudd was ruled out because of right knee soreness. Fudd had provided Dallas with an important perimeter scoring option, particularly from three-point range.
Without her shooting, the Wings had fewer reliable threats on the outside. Aziaha James moved into the starting lineup but struggled to find her rhythm, while Golden State’s defense consistently made it difficult for Dallas to create clean scoring opportunities.
The Wings managed only five made field goals in each of the first three quarters, allowing the Valkyries to gradually pull away.
Valkyries Take Control
Golden State established control with disciplined defense and balanced scoring. The Valkyries entered the contest with one of the league’s best defensive units and showed why, forcing Dallas into 13 turnovers while controlling the game on both ends of the floor.
Veronica Burton led the Valkyries with 22 points and seven assists, helping Golden State maintain its advantage throughout the night.
Dallas struggled to find a consistent offensive answer. Paige Bueckers finished with a team-high 17 points, but the rookie guard could not carry the Wings by herself.
Arike Ogunbowale, normally one of Dallas’ primary offensive weapons, was held to five points on 2-of-10 shooting. The lack of production from the Wings’ key scorers left Dallas chasing the game for much of the night.
A Difficult Stretch After the Break
The loss adds to a difficult stretch for Dallas since the All-Star break. Although the Wings have shown flashes of their earlier form, consistency has become an issue as the regular season moves toward its decisive stage.
Friday’s defeat was particularly damaging because Golden State is one of the league’s top teams, making Dallas’ inability to establish an offensive rhythm even more apparent.
The Wings also face the challenge of a demanding schedule. The team is navigating a stretch of six games in 12 days, putting additional pressure on a roster that is already dealing with injuries.
Dallas Looks for a Response
Despite the setback, the Wings remain in the playoff picture and have time to correct their problems.
The immediate priority will be finding greater offensive consistency, taking better care of the ball and getting healthy. Fudd’s status will be worth monitoring, particularly given the importance of her perimeter shooting to Dallas’ attack.
The Wings now turn their attention to the next game, hoping to put the Valkyries loss behind them and rediscover the form that made them one of the league’s more competitive teams earlier in the season.
With the playoffs approaching, Dallas cannot afford for its post-All-Star struggles to become a prolonged slump.
