Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions found their offensive rhythm after a difficult opening half, but the late surge was not enough to overcome the Buffalo Bills in a 41-31 loss Thursday night.
Goff finished with 327 passing yards and four touchdowns on 26-of-38 passing, giving Detroit a strong offensive performance despite the team’s slow start. He threw touchdown passes to Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown twice and Sam LaPorta.
The Lions fell behind 21-0 early in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 27-10. Detroit’s offense became much more productive after halftime, but Buffalo repeatedly answered each challenge and maintained control of the game.
Lions Find Their Rhythm After Halftime
Detroit’s turnaround began late in the first half when Goff connected with Gibbs for an 11-yard touchdown.
After the Bills extended their advantage to 27-7, Jake Bates added a field goal as the first half ended, giving Detroit some momentum heading into the break.
The Lions carried that momentum into the third quarter. Goff led an 11-play, 74-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown pass to St. Brown, cutting Buffalo’s lead to 27-17.
Detroit continued to pressure Buffalo in the fourth quarter. Goff found LaPorta for a 1-yard touchdown, bringing the Lions within 10 points at 34-24 with just under 11 minutes remaining.
But Buffalo responded with a long drive capped by James Cook’s 1-yard touchdown run, restoring a 17-point advantage.
Goff then connected with St. Brown for a 27-yard touchdown with 1:42 remaining, but Detroit’s attempted onside kick was recovered by Buffalo, ending the comeback opportunity.
St. Brown Delivers Big Performance
Amon-Ra St. Brown was one of Goff’s biggest targets throughout the game.
The Lions receiver finished with nine receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns, including the late score that briefly gave Detroit another chance to close the gap.
Jahmyr Gibbs also contributed six receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown through the air, while LaPorta added a touchdown reception.
Despite the passing production, Detroit struggled to establish its running game consistently. Gibbs finished with 52 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Buffalo’s Fast Start Proves Costly
The Lions’ biggest problem was the opening stretch.
Buffalo scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and built a 21-0 lead before Detroit could establish a consistent offensive rhythm. The Bills finished the night with 446 total yards, compared with Detroit’s 355.
Josh Allen accounted for five Buffalo touchdowns, throwing three touchdown passes and rushing for two more. James Cook added 135 rushing yards and a touchdown, helping Buffalo control the game late.
The Bills also converted their opportunities in the red zone, scoring touchdowns on all five of their trips inside Detroit’s 20-yard line.
Jared Goff Numbers Stand Out Despite the Loss
From an individual standpoint, Jared Goff produced one of the stronger passing performances of the game.
He completed 26 of 38 attempts for 327 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, finishing with a 130.0 passer rating.
However, Buffalo’s early advantage meant Detroit was forced to play from behind for most of the night.
The Lions also had difficulty protecting Goff at times. He was sacked four times, while Buffalo’s defense created pressure during several important situations in the second half.
Detroit Drops to 1-1
The defeat moved Detroit to 1-1 on the season.
The Lions now return home for their next game against the New York Jets on September 27. After the loss in Buffalo, Detroit will have time to review the defensive problems that allowed the Bills to score 41 points and the offensive struggles that contributed to the early deficit.
The second-half performance provided a positive element for Detroit, particularly Goff’s efficiency and the production from St. Brown. However, the early 21-point hole ultimately proved too difficult to overcome.
For Buffalo, the victory moved the Bills to 2-0 and marked the team’s successful opening of its new Highmark Stadium.
