Young was knocked unconscious during the sixth inning when McLean accidentally struck him in the head with his knee as the two converged near first base. The Mets first baseman remained motionless on the field before medical personnel attended to him and eventually transported him from the field on a cart.
The Mets later received encouraging news regarding the initial medical examination. Interim manager Andy Green said Young’s CT scan was negative, although the 31-year-old was experiencing concussion symptoms. Young also had full use of his extremities.
Collision Occurred During Sixth Inning
The incident happened with two outs in the sixth inning while Philadelphia was leading 1-0.
Phillies rookie Justin Crawford hit a slow ground ball toward the infield. McLean moved toward first base to cover the bag, while Young attempted to field the play and keep contact with first base.
As McLean continued toward the bag, he collided with Young’s head. Young fell face-first to the ground and remained down as players from both teams gathered around him.
